About UsFrom a cigar box in the closet
Day Air Credit Union was founded in 1945, by 26 employees of the United States Air Force Depot - Gentile Station (later known as DESC); who came together as a group to help each other improve their individual financial situations. After much discussion, the original members decided to combine the words "Dayton" and "Air Force" creating the name we know, "Day Air."
The first office of Day Air Credit Union was located in a small room within the DESC facility, where an old cigar box held our member's funds. We moved twice within the DESC campus, finally settling into slightly larger quarters in Building One. In 1996, the credit union vacated the DESC campus, as the center was slated for closure. Today, Day Air has three full-service locations in Montgomery County. These locations offer professional, member service driven employees with convenient hours, and the Wilmington Pike facility features a drive-thru and Saturday hours.
In the beginning the services were limited, and the money scarce, but the 26 members were enthusiastic about their credit union. In the early years when a member requested a loan, it was not uncommon for the member to wait up to two weeks for a decision from the Credit Committee. Any loan for more than $25 required collateral and an excellent reason; plus the borrower was required to deposit an extra 25¢ into their share account each time a loan payment was made. Today, any individual applying for a loan can have an answer in as little as five minutes regardless of whether they apply in person, over the phone, or on the Web.
Over the years our continued growth has enabled us to evolve into a full service financial institution. Gone are the days of the hand kept ledger, the cigar box, and the limited offering of savings accounts and small loans. Today, our members can choose from a wide variety of financial products. From first mortgages and car loans to Internet account access and investment services, Day Air Credit Union continues to offer our members the tools they need to manage their finances effectively.
In 2001, Day Air responded to member requests and introduced Bill Payer. This product allows members who are signed up for Internet account access to pay their bills online from their checking account. Members can access their accounts and pay bills at their convenience; it doesn't matter if the clock reads 3:00 PM or 3:00 AM. These technological tools have helped to usher out the era of "Banker's hours" and usher in the era of "Member's hours."
